“Most vampires are afraid of me.” He straightened. “Why aren’t you afraid of me?”

“Armand said vampires were terrified of you because they saw you as the only way they could be killed.” She set her shoulders back. “I’m human. Another human can kill me. A regular vampire can kill me. You? You’re gonna have to get in line.”

“Good point.” He chuckled inwardly.

She opened the door. “I got your sample.”

He’d shipped the vial of Alexander’s blood in a temperature-controlled container a few hours after he’d drawn it.

At a set of computers, she tapped on the keyboard. After a few mouse clicks, she turned the monitor toward him. “One hundred percent human, Loren.”

“No trace of what happened?” He studied the markers, tracking a sharp line down the screen.

“Nope.” She touched his shoulder softly. “Were you hoping there would be?”

Yes. “No. I have enough issues with New York wanting to capture Julianna because she’s different. It makes me feel better that Alexander is safely out of danger.” Loren suffered a final attack of emptiness. Alexander had left him for good. All he had now was Julianna. And like an idiot he’d just left her! “Did you compare it to Julianna’s?” He shoved that thought away.

Taylor was a sharp scientist; Loren knew she’d kept a sample of the blood that saved Alexander. Her sneaky smile confirmed his suspicion.

“What I see is that she’s not human.” Taylor brought up a chart of Julianna’s DNA.

“I’d be surprised if she was. Given what she can do.” Loren ran his fingers along the screen to study the markers. “Do you see anything to indicate why she didn’t fully turn?”
